To improve safety during foggy weather on national highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced several measures. These steps aim to enhance visibility and protect road users during the winter season.
Key Mitigation Measures
NHAI’s efforts include two main categories: Engineering Measures and Safety Awareness Measures.
Engineering Measures: These involve reinstalling damaged road signs, improving pavement markings, adding reflective markers, and installing solar blinkers and hazard signs at critical locations.
Safety Awareness Measures: These focus on alerting drivers through Variable Message Signs (VMS), Public Address Systems, and social media. Drivers will be advised to maintain a speed limit of 30 km/h in foggy areas, and safety pamphlets will be distributed at toll plazas.
Enhanced Coordination with Traffic Police
NHAI will also conduct joint drills with traffic police to improve coordination during fog-related emergencies.
Financial Powers for Quick Action
Field officers have been granted financial powers to quickly address accident-prone spots, further enhancing safety during foggy weather.
These combined efforts aim to reduce accidents and improve road safety during winter fog.
